How to Best Reuse or Recycle HOPE Pet Food Packaging

If you’re here, we hope it means your treat bag is empty and your dog(s) enjoyed our treats! HOPE’s treat bags are recyclable, but to make sure it ends up in the right place, please take the following measures:

  1. Rinse your used bag. All recyclable materials are much more likely to actually be recycled when they are cleaned before going into the blue bin. Even a little bit of leftover food in plastic containers destines it, and anything it contaminates in the recycling process, for landfill.
  • Learn more about recycling contaminants across Canada and the importance of cleaning your recyclables here.
  • Check with your local recycling program most likely found on your regional website to make sure that our products can be recycled in your area. Some major cities have online apps ( Like Waste Wizard in Toronto and WasteWise in Edmonton) that you can consult if you’re not sure whether an item is recyclable.
  • HOPE is always working to grow its presence with plastic-free stores across Canada. An alternative option that will lengthen the life of your HOPE treat bag is to reuse and refill your treats at one of our zero-waste partners (link partners page) near you!

Thank you for doing what you can in the global mission to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Why Plastic?

Currently, HOPE’s windowless plastic packaging is the most ideal packaging option to preserve our products' shelf life and quality. Alternative compostable plastic packaging options do not hold moist products well, meaning our treats would not last long and there is a significant risk of cross-contamination and plastic absorption into our treats. Compostable and biodegradable plastic is not necessarily a more sustainable solution due to the fossil fuel use in production and the significant micro-plastic creation that occurs during its breakdown stage.

HOPE Pet Food is always on the lookout for more sustainable solutions to our packaging. We use recyclable materials and windowless packaging to ensure the most opportunity to be recycled and extend the life and opportunity for reuse of our products. Any plastic products with windows indicate they are less likely to be recycled as they contain multiple types of plastic and are not easily separated.
