Let’s Talk Algae for Dogs!

Algae are weird and wonderful organisms that have so much to offer!

So what exactly is Algae? Well, it’s a diverse group of usually aquatic plants. From single-celled organisms to seaweed algae’s got the goods. Some species of algae are over 50% protein! Compare that to a chicken breast that’s only 34.5% protein algae truly isn’t to be ignored! Other species are full of vitamins, minerals, and trace elements that also make them a great addition to pet food formulas.

Types of Algae

There are two types of algae: macroalgae and microalgae. Our macro buddies include red, green and brown seaweeds, and can be great sources of protein, fat, vitamins and minerals. Whereas our micro friends are some of the more commonly known algae like spirulina and chlorella. These species are more popular for human consumption.

Why we love Algae for Dog nutrition

Algae can be used in pet food as a plant-based source of protein and it can also provide long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids DHA and EPA. These are all essential for growing puppies and kittens! Recent studies have even looked into omega 3’s provided by algae oil and its effects on canine senescence, immunity, gestation and lactation. Algae is also used in pet food as a source for calcium and other vitamins, minerals and trace elements crucial for balanced nutrition.

We’ve only scratched the surface for the potential uses of algae. The great thing is its a sustainable source for many of the nutrients both people and pets need in their diets. Algae will undoubtedly play a big role as an alternative protein source in the future!

How We’re Using Algae for Dogs

At HOPE we’re using algae for dogs. Specifically a species of brown algae that goes by the name Ascophyllum nodosum. That might sound like something from out of this world but actually, it’s just a really big seaweed that grows in cold water. The best part about this seaweed is it has almost 7x the amount of calcium than milk does. It also is rich in potassium, iron, magnesium and has some manganese in there too.

One reason we use algae for our dog formula is because it's rich in calcium. Algae has 7x the calcium that milk has.

Adding seaweed to our formula is a big part of creating the perfect balanced nutrition for your furry friend. Learn more about our formula here!
